Wireless service provider AT&T Inc. said that vlingo, a Cambridge firm specializing in voice recognition application for cellphones, has been awarded first place in AT&T’s Fast-Pitch New England mobile application developer competition.

As a result of that first-place finish, "Vlingo receives a $10,000 cash prize and the opportunity to be considered for wider distribution, reaching millions of customers on one of AT&T’s mobile Internet portals," AT&T said in a press release. "Vlingo by vlingo is a voice-powered user interface that unlocks access to mobile phone wireless data services."

According to vlingo's website, consumers who have vlingo-enabled cellphones don't need to triple-tap on a small keyboard; instead they "simply speak to their mobile phones to enter search terms, addresses, or any other text."
