Work-related deaths held steady in New England
A preliminary count found that there were 162 fatal work injuries in New England in 2007, the same level as recorded in 2006, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said today.
However, there were 74 fatal work injuries in Massachusetts last year, compared with 66 in 2006, said the bureau, which is part of the US Department of Labor.
The number of New England fatalities in 2007 represented the sixth lowest level recorded since the series began in 1992, the bureau said.
In New England, more than a third of work-related fatalities resulted from transportation incidents including highway, water vehicle accidents, and pedestrian accidents, the bureau said.
In 2007, fatal work injuries in New England accounted for 3 percent of the 5,488 fatalities nationwide, the bureau said.
