Alnylam Pharmaceuticals Inc. of Cambridge said it has formed an exclusive collaboration with the University of California at San Francisco to evaluate the potential of an RNAi therapeutic for the treatment of metastatic uveal melanoma, a highly aggressive cancer of the eye.

Alnylam is a biopharmaceutical company seeking to develop novel technologies based on RNA interference, or RNAi, a naturally occurring mechanism within cells for selectively silencing and regulating specific genes. Since many diseases are caused by the inappropriate activity of specific cells, the ability to silence genes selectively through RNAi has great medical potential.
