Clean Harbors Inc., an environmental and hazardous waste management company based in Norwell, wants to install solar power and other alternative energy equipment on some of the 16,000 acres it owns throughout North America.

The work, expected to start next year, will be overseen by a new subsidiary called Clean Harbors Development, which will be headed by Bill Geary, a 19-year veteran of the company.

Clean Harbors said it will initially concentrate on 15 to 20 sites -- mostly landfills -- in the western US. No sites have yet been identified in Massachusetts.

"We would expect that the bulk of any energy that is generated would be for sale to the power grid," Geary said.

The company said it is in the process of determining how much power could be generated.
