The continued development of the American Locomotive Works property in Providence, R.I., could be delayed.

City Council finance committee chairman John Igliozzi says his committee is considering delaying a vote on a $7.3 million tax increment financing plan and a separate tax stabilization plan for developer Struever Bros., Eccles and Rouse.

Igliozzi says in light of the economy, the project may not be in the best interest of the taxpayers. He worries about flooding the struggling housing market with more units.

Representatives of the Baltimore-based developer are scheduled to meet with council members this week.

The $333 million development plan for the 23-acre site included 650 residences, 450,000 square feet of commercial space, and a 180-room hotel. (AP)
