AMSC announces successful test of Navy motor
American Superconductor Corp., a Devens energy technologies company, said the US Navy successfully tested a 49,000 horsepower ship propulsion motor that includes the company's technology.
American Superconductor, which refers to itself as AMSC, was the prime contractor for the research and development phase of the project, and it shared the work with Northrop Grumman Corp., a California defense contractor.
The propulsion motor, which has the potential to reduce ship weight by nearly 200 metric tons, incorporates HTS wire that is able to carry 150 times the power of similar-sized copper wire, AMSC said in a press release.
