Clinical Data Inc. of Newton said it is encouraged by data from its testing of a drug candidate for the treatment of major depressive disorder, or MDD.

The drug candidate is vilazodone, and Clinical Data said in a press release that the investigational compound had "achieved statistically significant results on the primary endpoint and secondary efficacy endpoints related to MDD" in the second of two Phase III trials.

Based on the results from that study, the company said that it expects to file a New Drug Application for vilazodone as an MDD treatment with the Food and Drug Administration by the end of the year.
