Jeff Hager has pushed the envelope of breakfast science to win the first-ever "Create Dunkin's Next Donut" contest, Dunkin' Donuts, the Canton-based coffee-and-baked goods chain said today.

Hager's culinary triumph is titled "Toffee for Your Coffee," and Dunkin' Donuts described it as a "glazed, sour cream cake donut topped with chopped Heath Bar" bits.

Hager, a resident of Hoover, Ala., will be awarded a $12,000 prize, and "his winning donut will be sold in Dunkin' Donuts locations throughout the country beginning this fall," the chain said.

Dunkin' timed the announcement of the winner to coincide with National Donut Day, which is celebrated on the first Friday in June - a.k.a. today.

As part of National Donut Day festivities, "participating Dunkin' Donuts shops throughout the country will offer every customer a free donut of their choice, with the purchase of any beverage, limit one per customer," the chain said.

Hager was selected as one of 12 contest finalists from nearly 130,000 donut contest creations submitted online, Dunkin' Donuts said.
