Garden has new name, new logo
It's official. As of right now, the place where the Bruins and Celtics play is the TD Garden, and the old TD Banknorth Garden name is history.
To celebrate the arena's fourth name change since its 1995 debut, arena owner Delaware North Cos. and TD Bank, which holds arena naming rights, said in a press release that they will begin the TD Garden Golden Ticket Giveaway.
Describing the giveaway, the press release said: "Hidden among 19,600 FREE, limited edition TD Garden chocolate bars will be five TD Garden Golden Tickets. Winners of the TD Garden Golden Tickets will receive a behind the scenes tour of the TD Garden, a 10 game pack of tickets and a $500 Garden Gold card. One TD Garden Golden Ticket recipient will win the grand-prize, a pair of tickets to every event at the TD Garden for the 2009-2010 season. "
The plans for the name-change were announced in April, and the name-change was implemented today with the unveiling of new signage.
The new TD Garden name has its roots in a bank merger. In early 2008, TD Banknorth's parent, Canada's Toronto-Dominion Bank, closed on its $8.5 billion purchase of Commerce Bancorp Inc. of New Jersey. The two banks said they would be known as TD Commerce Bank. Commerce Bank & Trust Co., a small bank with a similar name in Worcester, then filed a lawsuit to bar TD Banknorth from using "Commerce Bank" in Massachusetts as its brand, with or without "TD" in front. The Worcester-based bank said it also would seek to bar TD Commerce from using its new name on Boston's sports arena.
