McDonald's is opening a new front in the ongoing java wars against such joe rivals as Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts.

To show how serious it is about its McCafé products, McDonald's said it will give away free 7-ounce Iced Mochas and 8-ounce Hot Mocha each Monday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at participating restaurants through Aug. 3.

You don't have to buy anything else, such as an Egg McMuffin to qualify for this freebie, a local spokeswoman for McDonald's swore. Free is free, she said, and the only limit is one free product per visit per customer.

In a press release, McDonald's said it expects to give away an estimated 10 million samples nationwide during its McCafé Mocha Monday promotion.

In its salad days, McDonald's was best known for burgers and fries. And while Quarter Pounders and Big Macs continue to be menu mainstays, many of the chain's latest initiatives have focused on caffeine.

"Each McCafé espresso-based coffee starts with fully ripened Arabica coffee beans harvested by hand in Central America, South America, and Indonesia," the press release said. "Each drink is made with premium ingredients, including freshly ground espresso beans, real milk, rich chocolate syrup, and fresh whipped cream.  The beverages are fully-customizable, available with whole or non-fat milk, with or without whipped cream, and with fewer or additional shots of espresso or pumps of chocolate syrup."
