Raytheon announces missile test result

Raytheon Co., the Waltham-based defense contractor, said a company Standard Missile-3 destroyed a short-range ballistic missile target in space July 30.

"The test marked the 15th hit-to-kill intercept for SM-3 and the 19th missile intercept of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense program," Raytheon said in a press release.

The target ballistic missile was launched from the US Navy's Pacific Missile Range in Hawaii while the crew of the guided missile destroyer USS Hopper fired the SM-3, Raytheon said.

The SM-3 is being developed as part of the Missile Defense Agency's sea-based Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System, the company said.

Separately, Raytheon said its board of directors has elected Stephen J. Hadley as a company director.

"Hadley, 62, is currently a senior advisor for International Affairs at the U.S. Institute of Peace," a second Raytheon press release noted. "From 2005 to 2009, he served as assistant to the president for National Security Affairs (National Security Advisor). During his tenure, Hadley served as the principal White House foreign policy advisor to President George W. Bush ..."
