38 Studios LLC, the Maynard video-game company founded by former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling, said that Jennifer MacLean, its senior vice president of business development, is succeeding Brett Close as chief executive.

38 Studios is bidding to become a major player in the market for massively multiplayer online games, or MMOs.

"Brett resigned from 38 Studios to pursue other opportunities outside the company," a 38 Studios spokeswoman said. "38 Studios wishes Brett the very best in his future endeavors."

The spokeswoman said that Close was unavailable for interviews and that 38 Studios would have nothing more to say beyond its press release.

In a statement, Schilling said: “I'm proud to appoint as head of our company such a deserving and extraordinary member of the 38 Studios team. As the new chief executive, Jen will continue the journey in delivering on our vision of creating new entertainment experiences. Brett's leadership over the last three years has well-positioned 38 Studios for the next phase of the company's development."
