Bedford's iRobot Corp. said it has been awarded a $13.5 million contract from the Naval Sea Systems Command.

Under the terms of what is described as an "Indefinite-Delivery/Indefinite-Quantity" contract, any service can order up to the full $13.5 million value in PackBot MTRS (Man Transportable Robotic System) robots, spare parts, accessories, engineering enhancements, configuration management, training, and repair services, iRobot said in a press release.

The company makes robots that perform such household tasks as vacuuming a room as well as PackBots, robots designed for military uses such as detecting and disabling explosive devices.

To date, iRobot said that it has delivered more than 2,500 PackBot robots that "keep warfighters out of harm's way."
