Old Sturbridge Village projects banner year
Old Sturbridge Village, which bills itself as a living history museum, said it is on track for its "best year in a decade."
The village's attendance from Feb. 1 through July 31 rose 6 percent to 132,763, compared with 125,714 for the same period last year, the village said in a press release. Based on those figures, the village now said it is hopeful that 2009 will prove to be a strong year.
One optimistic note: School field trip visits jumped 6 percent during the last school year - the first increase in field trip visits to Old Sturbridge Village since 2001, the press release said.
The release noted that the museum posted an 8 percent attendance gain in 2008.
The release did not offer an explanation for the atttendance gains. But one factor might be that the recession is causing an increase in so-called stay-cations - daytrip family outings instead of a more expensive extended vacation.
