The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. said it is escalating its discount program by doubling the number of sale items each week.

The Quincy-based chain added in a press release that is also "introducing new shelf tags and in-store signage, along with a redesigned loyalty card."

Meanwhile, customers can raise money for local schools with the roll out of the A+ Bonus Bucks program," the release said. "Between Oct. 9, 2009, and March 25, 2010, customers can earn A+ Bonus Bucks points for the school of their choice when they shop with their Stop & Shop card."

As for escalating its discount program, Stop & Shop said the timing is pegged to the back-to-school season, "a time that is traditionally hard on families' checkbooks" and that is especially so during a recession.
