WPI is set to open a life sciences center today
Worcester Polytechnic Institute said it will officially open a life sciences center today.
The new $11.5 million facility will be called the George I. Alden Life Sciences & Bioengineering Educational Center, said WPI in a press release that added that the center was developed with the help of a "transformational gift" from the George I. Alden Trust, WPI's most generous donor.
The new facility in Goddard Hall "will allow WPI to provide an outstanding education that will prepare students for careers in the life sciences and in health care, one of the nation's biggest and most important areas of growth," the release said.
The Alden Center will also complement the life sciences graduate programs that WPI offers at the Bioengineering Center in Worcester's Gateway Park, the school said.
Governor Deval L. Patrick has identified life sciences as a key area of potential growth for the Massachusetts, and a Business Update post from yesterday noted that a local biotechnology group estimated that biotech companies and research institutes employed nearly 46,000 people in Massachusetts last year.
Alden taught mechanical engineering at WPI for 28 years and established the trust that bears his name in 1912, WPI said.
