Free ice cream event will raise hunger awareness
Free ice cream alert: Today at noon, the Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. and the Breyers ice cream brand said they plan to start serving up free ice cream as part of an effort to raise awareness for Hunger Action Month.
Between noon and 2 p.m. today, plans call for Breyers to park an ice cream truck at the intersection of Cambridge and New Sudbury streets near Government Center in Boston.
Stop & Shop, the Quincy-based supermarket chain, and Breyers said they will donate $100,000 to Feeding America and its local member food banks. On its website, Feeding America describes itself as a domestic hunger-relief charity.
"Bostonians are invited to join this effort by purchasing limited edition Breyers All Natural Vanilla Ice Cream at their local Stop & Shop now through Oct. 1," Stop & Shop and Breyers said in a media advisory. "Twenty-five percent of the total donation will support Feeding America’s national efforts. The remainder of the donation will be distributed to area food banks, including the Greater Boston Food Bank."
