Hygeia appoints Gamzu as chairman
Hygeia Therapeutics Inc., a Holden life sciences company, announced the appointment of Elkan Gamzu as chairman to its board of directors.
Gamzu has nearly 40 years of pharmaceutical and biotechnology experience and has held senior executive positions at companies including Pharmos Corp., Millennium Pharmaceuticals, and Hoffmann-LaRoche, Hygeia said in a press release.
"Elkan brings a remarkable track record and a tremendous breadth of experience to our board," said Yael Schwartz, chief executive and president of Hygeia, said in a statement. "His expertise in drug development, clinical and regulatory affairs, combined with his exceptional knowledge of the industry will be an outstanding asset to Hygeia as we continue to build and advance our pipeline."
Gamzu most recently was chief executive of Epix Pharmaceuticals, a Lexington company that had been working on treatments for Alzheimer's disease and other ailments; in July, Epix confirmed that it was moving ahead with "an orderly liquidation" of its assets after failing to find an acquirer or obtain additional financing to stay afloat, a Globe story noted.
