First there was "Cash for Clunkers." And now there is "Bucks for Bears."

The Vermont Teddy Bear Co. said it has just launched a promotion that draws inspiration from the recent government "cash for clunkers" program, which offered discounts to folks who traded in old vehicles to buy more fuel-efficient cars.

bearkirk904.jpgUnder the "Bucks for Bears" initiative, people are invited to "send in their old, worn out teddy bears in exchange for $20 off the purchase of an authentic, handcrafted Vermont Teddy Bear," the retailer of stuffed bears said in a press release.

Be advised: A handcrafted bear can command a handsome premium. But when plush toys are available in Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock togs - and officially licensed, no less - a $100 price tag is nothing to flinch at. After all, ruinous expense does not deter the true Star Trek devotee or the aficionado of all things ursine and cuddly. (The photos of Kirk and Spock were taken from Vermont Teddy Bear's website. That's Spock with the un-bruin-like ears and the fun top in light blue.)

Commenting on the "Bucks for Bears" program in a statement, Vermont Teddy Bear Co. president and chief executive John Gilbert said: "If someone's not getting the mileage they'd hoped out of their old teddy bear, we encourage them to trade it in for cash towards a Bear that will really go the distance. Vermont Teddy Bears are handmade right here in Vermont, USA, and are unconditionally guaranteed for life, so they'll have their new bear forever."

Another word to the wise: "The company welcomes teddy bears of all shapes and sizes, but does warn that the money allocated for this program may run out soon, so those who are interested in taking advantage of the 'Bucks for Bears' program are advised to send their old bears in as soon as possible," the press release said.

The company, which is based in Shelburne, Vt., was the subject of a recent Globe story. To read that story, please click here.
