Staples Inc., the Framingham-based retailer of office supplies, said that its Roslindale store is the chain's first in the Northeast to be awarded gold certification in Leadership Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) by the US Green Building Council.

The Roslindale store includes such features as skylights that provide natural lighting and an energy-efficient roof, the company said in press release; the release also noted that many of the construction materials used to build the new store incorporated recycled content.

According to Staples, the Roslindale store is using 34 percent less energy than a standard store. The store opened last year, and Staples marked the store's getting its gold LEED certification today, a spokeswoman for the chain. (Globe Staff)
