As a Cambridge company specializing in technology that aims to provide speedy and rich Web content delivery, Akamai Technologies was well positioned to track online traffic yesterday on Cyber Monday, one of the busiest online shopping days of the year, and according to Akamai, the flow of retail traffic yesterday outpaced last year's Cyber Monday figures.

"As of approximately 11:30 a.m. ET yesterday, global retail traffic, as measured by the Akamai Index, had already surpassed the 2008 Cyber Monday peak of 6,713,653 global visitors per minute," Akamai said in an e-mail. "At 3:00 p.m. ET, the Akamai Index registered a peak of more than 7.9 million global visitors per minute to retail sites included in the Akamai Index. Visitors per minute originating from North America sustained levels of approximately 4.3 million for most of Cyber Monday afternoon until approximately 8:00 p.m. ET. By 9:30 p.m. ET, retail traffic peaked at 5,139,690 visitors per minute from North America."

Cyber Monday is the name given to the Monday after Thanksgiving, and the day is viewed by many retailers as the official start of the online holiday shopping season.
