Crate & Barrel to close Faneuil Hall store
After more than 30 years, upscale home goods chain Crate & Barrel is closing its Faneuil Hall Marketplace store on Jan. 24.
The Faneuil Hall shop, about 13,000 square feet, was the Illinois company's first location out East and "our Boston friends and customers literally helped put us on the map," the company said in an e-mail sent to shoppers today.
Vicki Lang, a Crate & Barrel spokeswoman, said the company's lease expired and the Faneuil Hall space was too small for the company's strategy that focuses on the home store concept, which includes furniture. A typical home store is between 25,000 to 30,000 square feet.
"It's certainly an important part of our history and our first launching pad for our Boston customer," Lang said.
The departure of Crate & Barrel is the latest setback for the Faneuil Hall Marketplace, which has struggled with vacancies. General Growth Properties, the bankrupt mall operator that runs Faneuil Hall Marketplace, did not return messages seeking comment.
