Free WiFi will continue at Logan, Massport says
The Massachusetts Port Authority board today voted to approve offering free WiFi to passengers at Logan International Airport in a joint effort with the service provider, Advanced Wireless Group, Massport said in a press release.
"One of the most frequently asked questions from our customers is: 'Why don’t you have free WiFi at Logan?'" Thomas J. Kinton Jr., Massport chief executive and executive director, said in a statement. "Well, we are pleased to be able to now say 'We do!'"
A secure WiFi system was installed throughout the airport six years ago at a cost of several million dollars, Massport said, and the charges for that service allowed that investment to be recovered.
"For the next two years, Massport will continue its partnership with AWG, and the free WiFi will be supported by advertising and sponsorship programs," Massport said.
Starting in mid November, free WiFi was available at Logan as part of a Google sponsorship, Massport noted, and during that period, "the use of the network increased nearly six-fold."
The Google sponsorship of free WiFi at Logan just expired, but because of today's Massport vote, free WiFi will continue to be available at the airport for the next two years, Massport said.
Before the Google sponsorship, WiFi users were charged a fee of $7.95 per day for the service, a Massport spokesman said.
