Many air travelers favor profiling, survey says
A majority of air travelers favor airport "profiling," giving extra scrutiny at airports to travelers based on their race, ethnicity, religion, or national origin, according to a new survey from TripAdvisor.com, a travel review website headquartered in Newton.
In the survey, 82 percent of respondents indicated support for security profiling at airports, TripAdvisor.com said in a press release.
The online survey was conducted earlier this week by a third-party firm hired by TripAdvisor.com, a company spokesman said; nationwide, there were 1,143 respondents, he said.
Other survey findings: 77 percent of travelers said they would rather have enhanced airport screenings, even if it meant longer lines at the airport, and 35 percent of travelers said they would favor a ban on carry-on luggage if it would make flights more secure, TripAdvisor.com said.
The Transportation Security Administration, or TSA, has attempted to increase airport security after the attempted bombing of a Detroit-bound flight from Amsterdam on Christmas Day.
In TripAdvisor.com's survey, 50 percent of respondents said they believe the agency is not doing a good job of increasing security; 20 percent of respondents said the TSA was doing a good job, while 30 percent were unsure.
