New Balance signs endorsement deal with Barringer
New Balance Athletic Shoe Inc., the Boston-based athletic footwear and apparel company that has generally steered clear of sports star endorsements, said today it has Jenny Barringer to a multi-year endorsement deal.
Barringer holds the American record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
"Jenny’s accomplishments as an athlete make her a great brand ambassador for New Balance," Tom Carleo, general manager of running at New Balance, said in a statement. "But it is her sincere passion and energy to give back to the community through organizations like Girls on the Run that inspires the entire company and make her such a natural member of the New Balance family."
For much of its history, New Balance was known primarily for sneakers that found great favor among middle-age joggers who liked the fact that New Balance shoes could be purchased in various widths. Meanwhile, rivals such as Nike Inc. and Reebok International Ltd. signed up big name athletes to endorse their sneakers as they avidly courted young consumers. In recent years, New Balance has looked to broaden its appeal.
New Balance reported worldwide sales of $1.64 billion in 2008.
