The number of Bay State single-family homes put under sales agreement in January was up 8 percent over the same time last year, the Massachusetts Association of Realtors said today.

"January marks the seventh straight month that the number of both single-family homes and condominiums put under agreement had increased over the year before," the association said in a press release.

The number of single-family homes put under agreement in January was 2,791 homes in 2010, up 8 percent from 2,576 homes in January 2009 and up 1.7 percent from 2,743 homes in December 2009, the association said.

According to the association, pending sales provide reliable information about where the real estate market is heading in coming months, and January's figures show that the local housing market continues to move in a "positive direction." Figures on January home sales that have closed will be issued later this month.

Last week, the association and the Warren Group, a Boston firm that tracks local residential real estate activity, issued reports on December sales.

December had the first year-to-year increase in Massachusetts median home prices since September 2007, according to Warrren Group figures. To read a Globe story about December sales, please click here.
