FDA approves Boston Scientific stent
Boston Scientific Corp. said it has gotten Food and Drug Administration approval to market an iliac stent system in the United States.
Stents are a major product for Boston Scientific, a large Natick-based medical device maker. Stents are generally small wire-mesh tubes used to keep open arteries after they have been unclogged by medical procedures.
The stent getting FDA approval is the Express LD Iliac Stent, which the company describes as a "premounted, balloon-expandable stent" designed to treat iliac artery disease. (A picture of a company stent is shown at right. It was taken from Boston Scientific's website.)
"Atherosclerotic iliac disease occurs when plaque builds within the arteries that supply blood to the legs, which can lead to poor blood flow, leg pain and other complications," Boston Scientific said in a press release. "The disease can be treated with medication, surgery, or angioplasty."
