Home improvement issues top consumer complaint
Complaints against home improvement contractors topped the list of consumer complaints made to state officials during 2009, the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation said this morning.
All told, 30,000 complaints were made to the office's hot line last year. Besides home improvement issues, other common complaints focused on auto insurance, health insurance, defective vehicles, and mortgages that lenders were attempting to foreclose on, the office said.
"Our mission today is threefold," said Barbara Anthony, undersecretary of the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation. "We want to tell consumers they are not alone. We want to educate them and give them information."
Anthony urged consumers to use the state's hotline. Its phone number is 1-888-283-3757.
Also available to help consumers with complaints are the Massachusetts Attorney General's office, the Better Business Bureau, and the Federal Trade Commission, Anthony's office said.
