The One Laptop per Child Foundation, a nonprofit headquartered in Cambridge, said in a press release that it has just delivered 774 XO laptop computers to students and teachers of a middle school in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

onelap309.jpgThe group was created by Nicholas Negroponte and others from the MIT Media Lab, and its mission is to provide cheap computers to poor school children around the world.

In a statement, Negroponte said: "The XO laptops will empower a new generation of Afghan citizens to connect with the world, think critically and challenge indoctrinations of intolerance. This is an important development for both the people of Afghanistan and for the world."

The foundation has experienced some ups and downs as the recession has cut into its corporate donations. To read a Globe story about the foundation, please click here.
