American Superconductor inks Australian deal

DEVENS - American Superconductor Corp., which makes equipment for power generators and utilities, said it has received an order from an Australian company for a large grid interconnection system.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The order by Vestas Australian Wind Technology Pty Ltd. for the D-VAR-based system is American Superconductor's largest order for a grid interconnection system to date. The system will be used to meet local grid interconnection requirements for the 206 megawatt Collgar Wind Farm under construction in Western Australia. American Superconductor expects to deliver the equipment to Vestas within 12 months. Vestas Australian Wind Technology Pty, based in Melbourne, Australia, is a unit of Denmark's Vestas Wind Systems A/S.

American Superconductor shares rose 84 cents, or 3 percent, to $29.74.
