Boston Scientific recall could cost $469m
Boston Scientific Inc., the Natick-based medical device maker, is projected to lose $469 million in defibrillator sales during the next two years as a result of its recent recall of the heart-rhythm devices, Bloomberg News is reporting.
The projection was calculated by Wells Fargo Securities analyst Larry Biegelsen. Two weeks ago, Boston Scientific said it had halted shipments of its defibrillators after determining that the company had not gotten approval from federal regulators for changes it made to the manufacturing processes.
Defibrillators are implantable devices that deliver electrical pulses to the hearts of patients at risk of sudden cardiac death. These devices represented an estimated 15 percent of the company's $8.2 billion in 2009 sales.
