Eastern Bank ranked highest in customer satisfaction among New England banks, according to a survey by J.D. Power and Associates, a marketing information services company headquartered in California.

J.D. Power's 2010 U.S. Retail Banking Satisfaction Study used a 1,000-point scale to measure satisfaction. The overall satisfaction of retail banking customers nationwide averaged 748, J.D. Power said.

In landing the top ranking for the New England region, Eastern Bank posted a score of 787. People’s United Bank was second in the region with a 771 score, followed by Webster Bank with 761, J.D. Power said.

According to J.D. Power, poor customer service and high fees were cited by consumers as among the big reasons why they switched banks.
