Thermo Fisher buys small Danish company

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc, a large Waltham-based provider of laboratory equipment, said that it has acquired Proxeon A/S, a Danish supplier of products for proteomics analysis.

Thermo Fisher Scientific's press release did not include a purchase price, but it said that Proxeon had revenues of approximately $10 million in 2009 and has nearly 40 employees. Thermo Fisher Scientific employs about 35,000 people around the globe and has annual revenue of more than $10 billion.

Proxeon will be integrated into Thermo Fisher's Analytical Technologies Segment, and Thermo Fisher Scientific said that it does not expect this transaction to have a material impact on its 2010 financial results.

In a statement, Marc N. Casper, president and chief executive officer of Thermo Fisher Scientifi, said: "By offering a high-performance solution that addresses the need for simplified operation, we can meet the increasing demand for LC/MS in proteomics applications. These systems can be easily integrated with our leading ion trap, hybrid and triple quadrupole mass spectrometry systems, in line with our strategy of providing comprehensive LC/MS solutions for both high-end research and routine applications."

 Separately, Thermo Fisher Scientific said it has opened a global food testing laboratory devoted solely to helping contain costly and life-threatening chemical contamination crises.

"The Food Safety Response Center, located in Dreieich, Germany, is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and staffed by world-class chemists who will quickly mobilize to aid governments and businesses facing an unknown food safety threat involving chemical contaminants," the company said in a second press release.
