Genzyme Corp., the large Cambridge biotechnology company, said that that Ralph Whitworth, principal and co-founder of Relational Investors LLC, has been elected to Genzyme's board of directors, effective immediately.
In a press release, Genzyme described Relational as one of its largest shareholders. A Globe story from February noted that Whitworth had been offered a seat on the board. A shareholder activist, Whitworth has pushed for measures to tie Genzyme executive compensation to performance, but he supports management's efforts to shore up the company's financial position and resolve lingering manufacturing problems.
Genzyme has been beset by challenges lately. Last year, it was forced to temporarily suspend manufacturing at its Allston facility because of contamination issues.
Carl C. Icahn, another activist shareholder, has been pushing for seats on Genzyme's board.
