In the culinary calendar, June 4 looms large as National Doughnut Day this year, and no one will be able to accuse Dunkin' Donuts of taking a laid-back approach to such a high holiday.

The Canton-based coffee-and-baked goods chain said it is gearing up a special promotion that could leave sinker buffs in a case of high excitement.

In a press release, the chain said, "On June 4, 2010, participating Dunkin' Donuts restaurants nationwide will offer every guest a free donut of their choice, with the purchase of any beverage, limit one per customer."

And that's not all. The chain will also mark the occasion by announcing the winner its second annual "Create Dunkin's Next Donut" contest. One of the 12 finalists, winnowed from a field of nearly 90,000 entries, will win a $12,000 grand prize and have his or her winning "donut" sold in participating Dunkin' Donuts restaurants throughout the country.

How exactly did National Donut Day come about?

According to Dunkin's release, "National Donut Day, held the first Friday of June each year, was founded by the Chicago Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who served donuts to soldiers in World War I."

If memory serves, World War I soldiers were known as "doughboys," and perhaps a fondness for doughnuts is one reason why.
