Harmonix Music Systems in Cambridge and its parent company, MTV Games, yesterday released the first playable demo of their upcoming video game, Green Day: Rock Band, the latest installment in the well-known series of music video games.

The demo allows players to virtually perform with the band on such songs as “Welcome to Paradise” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” The demo is available as a free download on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace for xbox 360 and the PlayStation Network for PlayStation 3.

The full version of Green day: Rock Band will be released on June 8 in North America. It will cost $59.99 for the stand-alone game, or $69.99 for a collectible edition, which will include six extra Green Day song downloads.
