Technology giant Microsoft Corp. said it has leased additional office space in Cambridge as it looks to consolidate its Massachusetts research-and-development operations in Kendall Square.
The company, which announced the move on a corporate blog, said it is leasing 113,000 square feet of space at One Cambridge Center to expand its Microsoft New England Research & Development Center, or NERD, at One Memorial Drive, a short walk away. NERD opened in 2007. It currently occupies 171,000 square feet of space, and 300 of the company's roughly 1,000 Massachusetts employees work there.
When Microsoft employees from Waltham and Beverly relocate to Kendall Square, something expected to happen over the summer, there will be 500 Microsoft employees in Cambridge, said Sara Spalding, NERD's site director.
Although Spalding said that Microsoft is steadily hiring in Massachusetts, the company's Bay State head count is not expected to grow dramatically because of the move.
