Survey: Many home improvement firms unlicensed
Many home improvement contractors who advertise in Massachusetts are unlicensed, state regulators found.
The Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation, which surveyed more than 1,000 ads in local phone books and online, found nearly one-fifth of the advertisements were placed by placed by unregistered companies.
And even when registered companies did have licenses, they didn't always include their current registration numbers in the ads, the survey found. Nearly 400 of the ads did not include any number, 94 included expired numbers and one displayed a revoked number.
Consumers can look up licensees on this section of the state's website.
