Logan International Airport's buses are getting greener.

A fleet of 50 alternative-fuel buses -- a mix of diesel-electric hybrids and vehicles run by compressed natural gas -- will be in place by late 2013, replacing the 94 diesel-powered rental car buses and 26 aging compressed-natural-gas buses that transport passengers between terminals, to the Blue Line MBTA station, and to the economy parking lots. The new buses are bigger and will be shared by multiple rental car companies, which means fewer of them will be needed.

The Massachusetts Port Authority board approved the nearly $35 million expense, part of the $337 million consolidated rental car facility scheduled to open by the end of 2013, at this morning's board meeting. Massport has applied for a Federal Aviation Administration Voluntary Airport Low Emissions grant to cover 75 percent of the cost of the new buses; the rest will be provided by the rental car fees put in place to pay for the new rental car facility.

Massport expects the new bus fleet to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 1,840 tons during the at least 12 years they will be in operation.
