The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. said it has completed its first solar installation in Boston, adding to seven other stores in the Northeast where it is already generating clean power, the company announced today.

The Quincy-based grocer installed photovotaic panels on its store at 1100 Massachusetts Ave. in Dorchester as part of a broader campaign to reduce its carbon emissions 20 percent by 2015. Stop & Shop has also installed panels on stores in Dedham and Somerville, as well as on five other outlets in New Jersey and Connecticut.

The solar panels, developed by Alteris Renewables Inc., will cut the overall energy consumed at those stores by 8 percent, Stop & Shop said.
