Taunton hospital to close two units
Morton Hospital and Medical Center in Taunton is closing two units, essentially putting 43 people out of work.
Officials announced Thursday that because of rising pension costs and declining Medicare, Medicaid, and private-insurance reimbursement payments, they would close the hospital's Transitional Care Unit and Occupational Health Services Program in the next two or three months.
Officials tell the Taunton Daily Gazette that 13 workers from the occupational services program and 30 from the transitional care unit will be given priority to apply for other jobs with the hospital. Those laid off will be offered "transitional benefits," including career advice. The hospitals says the closings will not negatively affect patient care.
