Bruker Corp. said it has agreed to acquire the scanning probe microscopy and optical industrial metrology instruments business from Veeco Instruments Inc. for $229 million in cash.

Billerica-based Bruker makes instruments that life-sciences and nanotechnology companies use for research and analysis.

In a statement, Bruker president and chief executive Frank H. Laukien said that the assets that Bruker is agreeing to buy "fit perfectly into Bruker's high-performance scientific instruments strategy, and are highly complementary to our existing product portfolio."

The transaction has been approved by the boards of directors of both companies and is expected to close during the fourth quarter, a company press release said.
