Red Sox have best fans in US, Forbes.com says
The Red Sox may trail the Rays and the Yankees in the standings. And the team's TV ratings are down from last year. But by one measure, the Sox stand tall.
According to Forbes.com, the Red Sox have the best sports fans in America.
And the Yankees? They were ranked a mere 14th, behind the likes of the Dallas Cowboys, the Montreal Canadiens, and the St. Louis Cardinals, not to mention the New England Patriots (5th on the list) and the Boston Celtics (7th). Alas for hockey fans, the Bruins were the only major Boston sports team not to crack the Forbes.com top 10.
Now before Yankee fans cut loose with a Bronx cheer and demand a recount, let's go to the Forbes.com metrics, which focused on pro teams in baseball, basketball, football, and hockey. (Sorry, soccer fans.) In drawing up its list and determining rankings, Forbes.com said it looked at such things as team merchandise sales, attendance at home and away games, and "in-market popularity," which was based on surveys by Turnkey Sports and Entertainment.
After crunching the data, Forbes.com concluded that the teams with the best fans were, in order, the Sox, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Detroit Red Wings.
(In the above photo by the Globe's Jim Davis, Sox fans are shown giving a standing ovation to Mike Lowell after he returned to action with a first-pitch home run yesterday at Fenway Park.)
