Children’s Hospital project breaks ground
Children's Hospital Boston today broke ground on a 10-story building that will significantly expand its clinical operations in the Longwood Medical Area.
The new building, estimated to cost $169 million, will include 44 in-patient rooms, additional emergency room space, and an expanded radiology department. The 125,000-square-foot facility will be linked on each floor to the hospital's existing clinical building near the corner of Binney Street and Longwood Avenue.
Children's Hospital executives said the expansion is badly needed to accommodate a sharp increase in patient volume over the last several years.
“It is critical that the hospital continually reinvest in projects that expand our ability to serve our dual role as the community hospital of the children of Boston and the region’s specialty pediatric hospital, ”said Dr. James Mandell, chief executive of Children’s Hospital Boston.
The new building is expected to be completed by summer 2013.
