Mass. taxpayers owed $3.4m, IRS says
The Internal Revenue Service said it is looking for Massachusetts taxpayers who are missing more than 2,000 refund checks totaling more than $3.4 million.
The checks were returned to the IRS by the US Postal Service due to mailing address errors, said the IRS, adding that the undeliverable Massachusetts refund checks average $1,673 this year.
“If you think you’re missing a refund, take a few minutes to go to IRS.gov or call the toll free IRS refund hotline,” IRS spokesperson Peggy Riley said in a statement. “The website is open 24/7 to help you get your check.”
To learn more, click on the agency's "Where's my refund?" Web page. Taxpayers can also call 1-800-829-1954.
The IRS said it encourages taxpayers to choose direct deposit when they file their returns because it puts an end to lost, stolen, or undeliverable checks.
