At winter's start, more long for summer rentals
Winter has barely tightened its grip on the Boston area, but some people are already thinking about securing a vacation rental for the summer, according to TripAdvisor.
In a survey released today by the Newton-based travel website, 40 percent of 1,400 US travelers said they are planning to sign up for a vacation rental this year, compared with 33 percent who stayed in rentals in 2010.
The most popular option is a waterfront property, according to the survey, with 47 percent of respondents who are considering rentals saying they long for a place on a beach. The most popular region for vacation rentals is the Southeast, with 31 percent of those polled citing it as their favorite destination. A TripAdvisor press release did not even mention the Northeast.
When asked what they liked about vacationing in a rental property, people most often cited abundant space, access to a kitchen, and cheaper prices.
"For travelers staying with larger groups in 2011, a vacation rental is a great option to consider for its home-like amenities and affordable pricing compared to hotels," said Hank Hudepohl, Trip Advisor's director of vacation rentals, in a statement.
