A unit of Harris Corp., which has a presence in Massachusetts, said it has been awarded a contract worth at least $289 million in Canadian dollars.

The Canadian province of Alberta has hired Harris to design and build a first responders radio communications system that will serve as a critical communications link among Alberta's first responders, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Government of Alberta Ministries, Florida-based Harris said in a press release.

Harris added that the contract could be worth up to $370 million Canadian. At current exchange rates, the contract has a potential value to Harris of between about $297 million and $381 million in US dollars.

Harris has more than 200 employees in Massachusetts, most based in Chelmsford; these local employees will assist in the engineering of the Alberta project and in its deployment, a company spokesman said.

Harris has about $5 billion in annual revenue and more than 16,000 employees.

A recent Globe story noted that the Massachusetts arm of Harris looks to be a market changer. To read that story, please click here.
