The Red Sox may beat the New York Yankees on the baseball diamond this year, but not at the bank.
According to an annual analysis by Forbes magazine, the Yankees are baseball's most valuable team with an estimated value of $1.7 billion.
Although Forbes ranks the Red Sox as the sport's most second valuable team, the Sox have a current estimated value of $912 million. In 1998, the gap between the number one Yankees and the number two Baltimore Orioles was 12 percent, Forbes said; today the Yankees are 86 percent more valuable than the current second most valuable team --- a.k.a. the Red Sox.
The third, fourth, and fifth most valuable teams are, respectively, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Chicago Cubs, and the New York Mets, according to Forbes. To see the full Forbes list, please click here.
The average Major League Baseball franchise is now worth $523 million, an all-time high and 7 percent more than last year, Forbes said.
