Ex-EMC employee sentenced for equipment thefts
A North Carolina man who stole and resold nearly $1 million in equipment from Hopkinton data storage company EMC Corp. was sentenced today to 42 months in prison.
Kevin Kelly was also ordered to pay restitution, and was forced to forfeit a sports car, an all-terrain vehicle, and a tractor.
From 2000 to 2009, Kelly smuggled equipment from an EMC factory in North Carolina. Using the identity of a friend who knew nothing about the thefts, Kelly sold the stolen goods online to BL Trading LLC of Hanover, Mass.
Kelly pleaded guilty in January to wire fraud, interstate transportation of stolen property, and aggravated identity theft. BL Trading was charged with wire fraud and illegal sale and receipt of stolen property, but the charges will be dropped after two years if the company makes restitution and takes steps to ensure it no longer trades in stolen electronic gear.
