Dunkin' salutes National Apple Pie Day
Superstitious types might say that today is Friday the 13th, but Dunkin' Donuts wants all hands to know that today is also National Apple Pie Day.
To salute such a red-letter day in the culinary calendar, the Canton-based baked-goods-and-coffee chain is sponsoring a contest on Twitter. Correctly tweet the kind of apples that Dunkin' uses in its "warm apple pie" menu item, and you could win a $50 Dunkin' Donuts Card.
"Anyone who offers a correct guess, using hashtag #ApplePieDDay, is eligible to win," Dunkin' said in a press release.
It's easy to understand why Dunkin' is putting on the dog for National Apple Pie Day this year.
"Warm Apple Pie" is part of the chain's new "Hearty Snacks" menu. Most dessert trolley devotees regard apple pie as something to be served up on a plate and eaten with a fork, but Dunkin' food scientists have converted this apres-dinner favorite into hand-held cuisine with a suggested retail price of $1.29.
"We're happy to help our guests celebrate National Apple Pie Day and honor one of our country's classic treats," Dunkin' Brands' executive chef Stan Frankenthaler said in a statement. "With a significant portion of consumers snacking more frequently in recent years, we've added Warm Apple Pie to our menu to help busy, on-the-go people satisfy their cravings with this all-American favorite snack, served fast and fresh any time of day."
No word yet on what Dunkin' plans to do for tomorrow, which according to food buffs is "National Buttermilk Biscuit Day."
